Sunday Musings: New Additions & Summer School Prep [6]

Two birds one stone - I stumbled upon The Sunday Post Meme hosted by the lovely Caffinated Book Reviewer & the Stacking The Shelves meme hosted by the awesome Tynga's Reviews! It is quite similar to what I'm doing here with my Sunday musings - recapping the week in book blogging universe as well as letting you guys know about what books I bought or received.

A week after being on vacation is hard - my body and my mind are still trying to adjust back into my normal routine! As we leave May behind and enter June, my daily schedule is about to get more complicated! I decided early February this year that I wanted to fast-track a little with my university courses and so I enrolled in summer school! For the month of June I will be taking an intensive Observational Painting course at OCADu here in Toronto. I'm super excited and super nervous about the course mainly because I'm not sure where I stand amongst the group of painters I'll be around. I am officially in the Illustration program at my University but the Observational Painting course I'm taking is in the Drawing & Painting department. I hope the adjustment is not too dramatic and nothing I can't handle!

I guess I should mention here briefly what my focus is with illustration. There are three things I love to do and they are: to draw&paint, to read and to write. I had a dream once where I got the chance to paint the things I read and so born, was my goal of becoming a book cover artist. Still haven't worked out the nitty gritty on becoming 'successful' in this goal of mine but in the mean time I'm enjoying an education in something I love. If anyone wants a portrait painted of them - shoot me an email! If anyone's interested a link to my in progress online portfolio could be found HERE.
~
This past week was the week of Book Expo America in New York City and yes I am kicking myself each day that goes by because I'm not there and couldn't plan my New York trip to coincide with the expo and con. I'll cross my fingers and pray that I make it NEXT year. For now I'll settle with reading all the awesome tweets about what's happening and seeing all the epic author photos going around Instagram and Twitter!
Did any of you guys attend Book Con? Did anyone meet Jesse Eisenberg? Any books that I should be made aware of and add to my TBR?

Review: Love, Lust & A Millionaire By Sandi Lynn

Title: Love, Lust & A Millionaire
Author: Sandi Lynn
Published Date: May 1st 2015

My name is Delilah Graham and music is my life. I moved from Chicago to live in the one place that I considered to be the center of the universe: New York City. At twenty-three years old, after raising my two brothers and sister, it was time for me to start my own life. I worked as a waitress in a greasy diner by day and, by night, I performed my music in small clubs around the city and on the streets of New York. That was until a man and his daughter stepped into the diner and changed my life forever. He hired me to be his daughter’s nanny, but I have a feeling he wants more from me.

My name is Oliver Wyatt and I made my first million at the age of twenty. Life’s been somewhat complicated since my five-year-old daughter, Sophie, was sent to live with me after her mother died. She drove away the nannies I hired to take care of her until one afternoon, while eating lunch, a beautiful waitress and my daughter shared a special connection. She was exactly what Sophie needed. My brother, Liam, said she was just what I needed. I am nothing but a man with a heart of stone, compliments of a girl I loved so many years ago. Lust is a powerful emotion; an emotion so strong that trying to deny it only makes it that much stronger. Now that I have met Delilah, rules will be broken and lines will be crossed.

Intended for readers 18+ (Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

I rarely rate a book with a 1 star but this one was just bad. The writing was not the greatest - a little cringe worthy at times. A lot of stop and go with no real flow to the sentences or words! The connection between characters was weak and the chemistry was hard to believe. The overall plot was intriguing and initially drew me into picking this book up but not enough to keep interested thoroughly. I forced myself to read and finish this one.

Reflect Thursday: Shining Books of Waiting on Wednesday! [4]

Do you ever feel after a day like Waiting on Wednesday your list of TBR grows significantly? I wanted to mention a few titles that really caught my eye this week on the blogosphere after browsing the wonderful Waiting on Wednesday lists!

1. Joyride By Anna Banks
Expected Release: June 2nd 2015

A popular guy and a shy girl with a secret become unlikely accomplices for midnight pranking, and are soon in over their heads—with the law and with each other—in this sparkling standalone from NYT-bestselling author Anna Banks.

It’s been years since Carly Vega’s parents were deported. She lives with her brother, studies hard, and works at a convenience store to contribute to getting her parents back from Mexico.

Arden Moss used to be the star quarterback at school. He dated popular blondes and had fun with his older sister, Amber. But now Amber’s dead, and Arden blames his father, the town sheriff who wouldn’t acknowledge Amber's mental illness. Arden refuses to fulfill whatever his conservative father expects.

All Carly wants is to stay under the radar and do what her family expects. All Arden wants is to NOT do what his family expects. When their paths cross, they each realize they’ve been living according to others. Carly and Arden’s journey toward their true hearts—and one another—is funny, romantic, and sometimes harsh.

(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

The cover is awesome for Joyride and the two main characters sound very intriguing! They come across quite different so I'm very interested in finding out how their lives come together!

1. The Anatomical Shape of A Heart By Jenn Bennett
Expected Release: November 3rd 2015

A mysterious graffiti artist, an anatomy-obsessed artist, and a night bus that will bring the two together.

Artist Beatrix Adams knows exactly how she's spending the summer before her senior year. Determined to follow in Da Vinci’s footsteps, she's ready to tackle the one thing that will give her an advantage in a museum-sponsored scholarship contest: drawing actual cadavers. But when she tries to sneak her way into the hospital’s Willed Body program and misses the last metro train home, she meets a boy who turns her summer plans upside down.

Jack is charming, wildly attractive . . . and possibly one of San Francisco’s most notorious graffiti artists. On midnight buses and city rooftops, Beatrix begins to see who Jack really is—and tries to uncover what he’s hiding that leaves him so wounded. But will these secrets come back to haunt him? Or will the skeletons in Beatrix’s own family’s closet tear them apart?

(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

Premise for this book sounds amazing! I love art and a good enthralling love story! This one sounds like its full of heist and emotions too! Can't wait for November to pick this one up!

What books did you discover after WOW? Create a post and leave a link in your description for me to check out!
& Much thanks to those who helped bring these books to my attention!

Waiting on Wednesday [5]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine - spotlighting books that haven't been released yet!

My Waiting on Wednesday this week is...
Under the Lights (Daylight Falls #2)
Expected Release Date: June 30th 2015

Josh Chester loves being a Hollywood bad boy, coasting on his good looks, his parties, his parents' wealth, and the occasional modeling gig. But his laid-back lifestyle is about to change. To help out his best friend, Liam, he joins his hit teen TV show, Daylight Falls...opposite Vanessa Park, the one actor immune to his charms. (Not that he's trying to charm her, of course.) Meanwhile, his drama-queen mother blackmails him into a new family reality TV show, with Josh in the starring role. Now that he's in the spotlight—on everyone's terms but his own—Josh has to decide whether a life as a superstar is the one he really wants.

Vanessa Park has always been certain about her path as an actor, despite her parents' disapproval. But with all her relationships currently in upheaval, she's painfully uncertain about everything else. When she meets her new career handler, Brianna, Van is relieved to have found someone she can rely on, now that her BFF, Ally, is at college across the country. But as feelings unexpectedly evolve beyond friendship, Van's life reaches a whole new level of confusing. And she'll have to choose between the one thing she's always loved...and the person she never imagined she could.

(Synopsis Provided by Goodreads)

This is a second in the Daylight Falls Series by Dahlia Adler but it can be read as a stand alone. I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before because it is totally a contemporary YA for me! Hopefully I can read the first one in the series Behind the Scenes before this one is released! I love the behind the scenes-fame life of youngsters trope in YA lit so this is perfect, right?

Is there such a thing as too much contemporary YA? LOL
Leave a link in the comments below to your own Waiting on Wednesday I'll make sure to stop by!

HAPPY READING!

Tuesday Thoughts & Talks [4]

This is a meme hosted HERE that asks us to present something we've learned or thought about after we finished reading a book to anyone out there - sparking a conversation amongst us!

What I Read to Spark the feels:

Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin was one of those instrumental books I read during high school that altered a really big part of me. I picked up this book because of the cover and didn't know it told such a deep story of life and death. Death wasn't something I thought much about before this book. What it meant and the significance of it. As a kid you're kind of taught to be sad and mourn but never told why it's sad or at least for me. I grew up in a family that dealt with death in sort of a silent way. After reading this book, I remember taking sometime to really think about what death might be like and what sort of aftermath it left with those around you. Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs but how many of those are based on someone else's ideals? I'm guilty of blindly believing in certain things because of how I grew up and I am in no means shaming or disregarding anyone. There are certain things that we believe in that tie us to our older generations or people. In the case of how we all think about life and death, and what they both entail, I think it's important we all develop our own way of perceiving them. They are such monumental moments in our life that I believe we should give them as much thought as possible.

What are your own beliefs on life and death? Do you think life and death is a personal journey or one meant with others?

If you want to participate in the Tuesday Thoughts & Talks, just grab the banner, post your own Tues.T&T on your blog & then leave a comment down below with a link to your post!

HAPPY READING!

Review: The Statistical Probability of Love At First Sight By Jennifer E. Smith

Title: The Statistical Probability of Love At First Sight
Author: Jennifer E. Smith
Published Date: January 2nd 2012

Four minutes changes everything. Hadley Sullivan 17 misses her flight at JFK airport, is late to her father's second wedding in London with never-met stepmother. Hadley meets the perfect boy. Oliver is British, sits in her row. A long night on the plane passes in a blink, but the two lose track in arrival chaos. Can fate bring them together again?

(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

Hadley Sullivan was reluctant to catch a flight to London to watch her, once beloved father, marry another woman who is not her mom. After he wanted out on the only family Hadley knew, she couldn't see him the same way again. Fiercely loyal to her mom, Hadley agrees to fly to London for her mom. She scrambles to make it to the airport for her flight but just as everything in her life works out, she misses it by four minutes. Now forced to wait for the next flight out, Hadley wanders the crowded airport with nothing but her claustrophobia and unresolved feelings about her dad. As if everything seems to be crashing and burning in front of her, Hadley meets Oliver. That smile and messy hair-do he's got going on, gives Hadley the calm she's been searching for. Fate has them sitting next to each other on the flight over to London. The hours they spend together is enough to let both of them know that what they have, is more than they bargained for. However when they reach London, reality hits and both are forced separate ways to face their own problems. What Hadley takes from Oliver is enough strength to face her father but is it enough to let Oliver go forever?

This book had high points and low points. The pace fluctuated and sometimes I was really intrigued - other times I was crawling through pages! Overall I just didn't feel connected to the characters and their interaction with each other. I was confused at why and how Hadley and her father's relationship grows in this novel. I guess this was one of those books I wanted to love but just couldn't.

Sunday Musings: Bookmail & Touring the Freedom Tower! [5]

Where do I begin to describe the last week? I just arrived back from my trip to New York today and I'm totally exhausted! I think in total I had about 15 hours of DECENT sleep in the last 6 days I was in New York! Between hanging out with my cousins and sight seeing/celebrating Memorial Day weekend, there wasn't time to rest! With that being said, I had a freakin' BLAST in New York! I got to tour the new One World Trade Freedom Tower that rose in place of the twin towers. It was such a monumental moment and it was surreal to be up there! What a way to spend Memorial Day Weekend! There was plenty of awesome food that was eaten but sadly not a lot of down time to read!

Before I left I got a chance to host an Debut Author Interview with the amazing Gina Ciocca! She wrote the beautiful book Last Year's Mistake which hits bookstores on June 9th. Gina is such a fun and down to earth author so check out the interview I did with her to learn more about how a writer and her story came to life!

~

Two new books came in the mail this week while I was away:

Broken Hearts, Fences and Other Things to Mend By Katie Finn
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto By Chuck Klostermann

Last but not least I'll end the post with a recap of my #monthofmaybookchallenge happening on my bookstagram:

18. Perfect Book Boyfriend (DREW EVANS) , 19. Best Plot Twist

20. Bookmarks , 21. Girl On Cover

Waiting on Wednesday [4]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine - spotlighting books that haven't been released yet!

My Waiting on Wednesday this week is...

Paper Weight By Meg Haston
Expected Release Date: July 7th 2015

Seventeen-year-old Stevie is trapped. In her life. In her body. And now in an eating-disorder treatment center on the dusty outskirts of the New Mexico desert.

Life in the center is regimented and intrusive, a nightmare come true. Nurses and therapists watch Stevie at mealtime, accompany her to the bathroom, and challenge her to eat the foods she’s worked so hard to avoid.

Her dad has signed her up for sixty days of treatment. But what no one knows is that Stevie doesn't plan to stay that long. There are only twenty-seven days until the anniversary of her brother Josh’s death—the death she caused. And if Stevie gets her way, there are only twenty-seven days until she too will end her life.

In this emotionally haunting and beautifully written young adult debut, Meg Haston delves into the devastating impact of trauma and loss, while posing the question: Why are some consumed by their illness while others embark on a path toward recovery?
(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

I've been waiting around for a book like this to come about since I read Cut By Patricia McCormick in high school. Stories that deal with self-harm and the journey of self struggle is so fascinating and truly eye opening. Paper Weight has a phenomenal synopsis that drew me in! Easily going to be picking this beauty up when it is released in July!

Review: Rock Chick By Kristen Ashley

Title: Rock Chick

Indy Savage, cop's daughter, rock chick and used bookstore owner, has been in love with Lee Nightingale, once bad boy, now the man behind Nightingale Investigations, since she was five years old. No matter what ingenious schemes Indy used to capture his attention, Lee never showed an interest and Indy finally gave up. Now Indy's employee, Rosie, has lost a bag of diamonds and bad guys are shooting at him. When Indy gets involved, Lee is forced to help. Complicating matters, Lee has decided he's interested, Indy's decided she's not. But she can't seem to keep Lee out of her life when she's repeatedly stun gunned, kidnapped and there are car bombs exploding (not to mention she's finding dead bodies).

Indy's best bet is to solve the mystery of the diamonds before Lee. Lee's challenge is to keep Indy alive and, at the same time, win back her heart.
(Synopsis Provided By Goodreads)

The story begins as we enter the life of India (Indy) Savage. All rock'n'roll with no plans to slow it down! Owner of her very own indie bookstore cafe, Indy comes and goes as she pleases. She grew up without her mother but she's found family love with her father and the Nightingales'. Kitty Sue and Malcolm Nightingale are parents to Hank, Ally and Liam, the five of them make up what Indy considers the family she's always had. However, Liam (Lee) Nightingale has always meant more to Indy. Ever since he held her hand through her mothers funeral, Indy's been a goner. She tried all through her childhood and most of her life really, to capture the attention of Lee but he didn't show any interest. Now, as mature adults, it only seemed right Indy finally let the infatuation go - move on from pining for someone who clearly wasn't interested. Except, Indy never cared to act her age and follow the norm. When one of Indy's workers suddenly gets involve in a robbery, she's got no choice but to rely on the one person she wanted to avoid, Lee. Their worlds finally meet again but this time, Lee's had a change of heart. Thrown into the heist of it, Indy's watching her life she thought she knew flip upside down. So full of action, cocky bastards, and lots of laugh out loud moments, Rock Chick is a book I think anyone can enjoy!

I can't believe I've put off reading this book! It was sitting there for me to pick up but I never did till my good friend told me I had to start it! (Thank you Jess!) I'm so glad I did! The characters were definitely unique and well written! There was a variety of personalities that were merged together with Rock Chick that made the story that much more dynamic! The author does not shy away from including lots of action and drama. There isn't a chapter that goes by that doesn't risk lives - so fun to read!

Sunday Musings: Book Haul & Trip to the Big CITY! [4]

The next week is going to be quite exciting. I'll be flying out to New York City for a couple days! I love travelling and try to do as much as I can in between school and work throughout the year. New York is kind of my home away from home. There is always such a great vibe when I make it out there. Any New York readers? Anyways, the reason for this trip is I'll be attending my cousins graduation party. He's officially done university and I'm so happy for him! He's worked his butt off to get to where he is today and I can't wait to celebrate with him - CONGRATS CUZ!

What this means for the BloggityBLOG is that I won't be posting any new reviews while I'm away but the usual Tuesday Thoughts & Talks, Waiting on Wednesday and Sunday Musings will be on schedule! It'll be hard for me to blog while I'm away. I'm going to really miss interacting and reading all the great posts that arise during these days! I'll be back in a week and hopefully can catch up on all that I miss. While I'm in America I hope I get a chance to pick up some of the book recommendations I've got from you lovely people in the book blogosphere! Review: The Promise of Amazing By Robin Constantine

Title: The Promise of Amazing
Author: Robin Constantine
Published Date: December 31st 2013

Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who's always done what she's supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.
(Synopsis Provided by Goodreads)

They met under the most oddest circumstances but one that promises the best outcomes. Wren is the good girl, the 'play-it-safe' type who doesn't really get noticed but also doesn't fall at the bottom of the social ladder. She's just Wren. Being the only child left at home isn't all its cracked up to be. Feeling the pressure of figuring out what comes next is catching up to her. What's next after high school? What's next for her parents? What's the next move Wren has to make? On the opposite side of the spectrum is Grayson. Cool, calm and collected, Grayson wanders his town with a tainted image. Expelled from his all boys prep school, he's the bad boy in everyones social eyes but it's not what he wants. He can't change what he did in the past. With a tainted image, Grayson can't seem to figure out what the 'right' move should be. He's got his own problems to figure out. All it took was one cocktail weiner and the Heimlich to bring Wren and Grayson together one night. And that's all it took to send both Wren and Grayson into each others arms. Will Grayson's past remain there or would that be the breaking point for them?

Another great contemporary YA novel that explores the pressures of being a teen along with a whole lot of fun in between! The writing in The Promise of Amazing was thoughtful and set just the right tone and pace for readers! Wren was a sweet girl with whom I felt a lot of connection towards. Grayson was that good boy-stuck in a bad boy world and that made for a really awesome read! Together these characters were just the right amount of opposite!
